The High Cost of A Lost Seed Phrase

In the world of cryptocurrency, seed phrases are literally the keys to your financial kingdom. These sequences of seemingly random words are the only backup to accessing your digital assets. While cryptocurrencies contain innovative technological advances, it's often the most banal human errors that lead to significant losses. Here are some of the most notable cases of lost cryptocurrency due to misplaced or forgotten seed phrases.

A Bitcoin Burial

The ultimate case of an honest mistake involves James Howells, a Welsh IT worker who mistook one encrypted hard drive for another and accidentally threw away the one containing the private keys to 8,000 Bitcoin in 2013. Even more unfortunately, Howells has spent years petitioning the Newport City Council in Newport, South Wales to allow him to search the landfill where his hard drive ended up, even offering to share a portion of the recovered funds with the city. The council has cited cost concerns, corrosion of the device, environmental impact and the potential of “treasure hunting” as reasons for blocking Howells excavation attempts. Despite multiple elaborate plans involving AI-powered robots and expert waste management teams, his requests to retrieve his fortune have been consistently denied. As of January 2025, the missing Bitcoins were worth $846 million.

When Memory Fails You

In 2011, Stefan Thomas lost an instrumental piece of paper which held the password to his 7,002 Bitcoin. He received the Bitcoin as payment for making an educational video about cryptocurrency. Thomas used an IronKey device, a USB drive designed with high-security features, permanently encrypting its contents after ten failed password attempts; he had only two password attempts left after failing to remember this monumental sequence of words. Thomas has attempted to regain access to his bitcoin wallet using different methods, including hypnosis and even hiring cryptography experts. Unfortunately, none of these attempts have been successful so far, leaving Thomas in a state of deep frustration and regret at the possible loss of $220 million.

The Fishing Rod Blunder

In early 2017 Clifton Collins, an Irish drug dealer, faced a complicated choice: where to hide the password to his Bitcoin fortune, which was estimated at $348 million. He settled on printing his password on paper and storing it in the aluminum cap of a fishing rod case. Collins was eventually arrested on drug charges and sentenced to five years in jail. Meanwhile, his landlord cleaned out his apartment and unknowingly discarded the fishing rod case, sending it to a landfill, where it remains buried and irretrievable.

Lessons Learned

These cautionary tales highlight critical lessons for cryptocurrency investors:

  1. Never store your seed phrase or private keys in just one location. Create multiple secure backups and remember where they are located in case they are destroyed.

  2. Consider using a combination of digital and physical storage methods, such as steel plates that can survive fires, floods and corrosion.

  3. If you're storing significant digital assets, consider using wallets with several ironclad security features.

  4. Regularly audit your backups to ensure they remain functional.

  5. Avoid unconventional storage methods and ensure access credentials are secure.

With better solutions for key management now available, the cryptocurrency world has evolved significantly since these incidents. However, the importance of properly securing your seed phrase remains the most critical action you can take. As these unfortunate incidents show, successful crypto wealth and complete loss often comes down to something as simple as losing a piece of paper or forgetting your password.
